What are the Physical Significance of Dipoles?
Physical Significance of Dipoles
- In most molecules, the centres of positive and negative charges coincide at the same point because the distance between the molecules is zero. So, their dipole moment is zero. However, they develop a dipole moment when an electric field is applied. These types of molecules are known as non-polar molecules. For example - Carbon dioxide and Methane
- In some molecules, the centres of positive and negative charges do not coincide. So, they have a permanent electric dipole moment, even in the absence of an electric field. These types of molecules are known as polar molecules. For example - Water molecules
