Physics > Motion in a Straight Line >
As we have already discussed some basic things related to this chapter. In this article, we will study some simple terms like a reference point, frame of reference, and position.
Reference Point
It is a point used to determine whether something is in rest or
motion. It is always taken at rest irrespective of the point that is
in rest or motion.
- It is also known as Origin.
- For example - An object lying on the table may be at rest with respect to a wall but it may be in motion with respect to the sun.
Frame of Reference
It is an abstract coordinate system whose position,
orientation, and measurement are determined by a set of
reference points.
- It is also known as Reference Frame.
- For example - A moving train may be in motion with respect to the person outside the train but it may be at rest with respect to the passengers inside the train.
Position
It is the coordinates (x, y, z) of the point from the origin or arbitrary reference point.
